Avoiding A Hangover Naturally (Day 161)

I try my best to avoid a hangover whenever I’m drinking (especially after New Years). I don’t drink too often, so when I do drink, I don’t have the best tolerance. And when you’re a hypochondriac, the worst thing is waking up and feeling like your liver is failing. The second worst thing is looking at yourself in the mirror and realizing you resemble a cast member of The Walking Dead. My three foolproof methods of avoiding hangovers are mostly common sense. And 2/3 of these methods involve water. Water is a no-brainer.

Method #1: Drink and then drink water.

In between my alcoholic beverages, I sip on a glass of water. I manage to remember to do this even when I’m drunk. The best part is that people never make fun of me for it, all of my equally drunk friends commend me on this strategy. All anyone ever says is:

“Are you drinking water? Dude… that’s so smart.”

Method #2: Put a glass of water beside your bed.

I always do this, even if I don’t feel thirsty in the moment. I know that when I wake up in a few hours to pee, all I’m going to want is something to quench my thirst. If I have an inkling of nausea upon waking up, I down the glass, go back to sleep, and wake up feeling great.

Method #3: Ginger beer.

If the above two methods were somehow forgotten, the best way to settle a hangover (in my opinion) is ginger beer. This isn’t alcoholic, it’s simply a stronger version of ginger ale and you can find it at your grocery store. I never take Advil after I’ve been drinking because I worry about mixing medicine and alcohol. Instead, ginger beer is my saviour.
